In Cantonese (southern China), in addition to the normal “mister” interpretation it also colloquially means teacher of either gender.

Not sure what the origin is, or whether it shares a common origin with Japanese interpretation.

It’s not the only thing where Chinese and Japanese readings differ.  reads as “daijbu”, meaning safe or OK, as in “are you OK?” In Chinese, though, it reads “dàzhàngf”, meaning “big husband”.
